What To Do Before Moving Day Arrives

The time leading up to moving day can seem both excruciating long yet sudden, all at the same time. Many times, we get so wrapped up in the stress of moving that we forget to take care of some basic to-dos.

We’re here to help keep you sane (at least we’ll try!) and give you some pointers on things you’ll need to take care of before the big day. What To Do Before Moving Day Arrives

Pack At Least One Box A Day – Give yourself a daily ‘quota’ of boxes to pack per day leading up to your move, it’ll make the moving day so much easier for you, your family, and the movers. It can be just packing up one box a day after dinner, trust us it’ll make you feel so much better!

Switch Your Utilities– Once you have a set closing date call the utility companies to figure out a date and time to make the switch. Making sure your internet is up and running will help avoid excessive data demands and overage fees on your cell phone.

Moving Locally? Take Basic Items To Your New Home. – Bringing basic items, such as cleaning supplies, extra clothes, a few lamps, food, water, etc. to your new house ahead of time cuts down on the moving day stress. Your exhausted, post-moving day self will thank you later for this.

Cancel Recurring Charges & Update Records – At least one month before you move, take care of canceling and updating memberships and subscription services. Update any magazine subscriptions so that they have your new address on file. Same goes for any credit cards your have on file with companies like Amazon whom you order from on a regular basis. Needless to say, you’ll also want to make a list of all the credit cards you’ll need to update to your new address to avoid any payment issues.

Take A Picture, It’ll Last Longer (& Save You Time!) – Here’s a bright idea: take pictures of the way all of your electronics are plugged in and configured before you pack them. Once moving day arrives, make sure to coil the cords and label them with masking tape so that you can easily get your TV up and running.

Pack Out-Of-Season Items First– If it’s the middle of July, pack up all of your winter clothes, snow gear, holiday items. Need we say more?

In With The New, Out With The Old – Do you really use that exercise ball that’s been sitting in the corner of the basement for the last two years? Host a yard sale to sell items that you no longer want and then donate anything that’s leftover. This way you won’t have extra ‘stuff’ crowding your new home.

Let friends and family know you’ve moved! – Thankfully there are so many easy ways to do this, such as sending out a mass email with your new address or even mailing out paper ‘We’ve moved!’ announcements. Trust us, people will thank you for keeping them in the loop.

Change your address! – It’s easy to do and you should do it about 2 weeks before you move. The USPS even has an online form you can fill out.

As the old saying goes, “Failing to plan, is planning to fail. “ Use these tips to help you keep your ducks in a row during your move.
