It is easy to feel like spring is still far away, but it will be here before you know it. Now is the time to start thinking ahead to prepare your home for a move this spring or summer. Decluttering is one of the simplest ways to prepare. It frees up space, which allows potential buyers to get a good feel for the space while also reducing the amount of items you will have to pack and transfer to a new home.
Decluttering is a hot topic these days with the release of Marie Kondo’s new Netflix series, which ties in seamlessly with her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Maybe you have heard all this talk about cleaning out your home and like the idea, but the task seems too overwhelming.
Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the same goes for cleaning up the clutter in your home. Start small by tackling one closet or even one drawer at a time. As you get into the rhythm of decluttering, you can take on bigger spaces without feeling nearly as overwhelmed. An even simpler way to start is by making a list of all the spaces that need to be cleaned out and posting it in a high traffic area, like on the refrigerator or your bedroom mirror, to keep you motivated.
Be careful not to get so caught up in cleaning out that your throw away items that could be donated. When pulling everything out of a closet or drawer, place items in one of three piles: keep, donate, or trash. From thrift stores to shelters, be creative in looking for ways to repurpose those items that you don’t need anymore.
Resist the urge to fill the cleaned out spaces with more things! This is a tough one. As you clear up space in your home, it can be tempting to find new items to replace the worn out things. While shopping, take a few moments to think about the item you are about to purchase and see if it is really a necessity.
What are you waiting for? Go ahead and get a head start on preparing your home for a move this spring!
