The weather outside may be frightful and chilly, but moving during the winter season doesn’t have to be as bad as you may think it is. Sure, the colder weather and the holiday season do make it a time that’s not the ‘ideal’ time to relocate, but we’ve put together some helpful tips to make your winter move as seamless as possible.
Get an Early Start – With the days being shorter, it’s a good idea to get all of your moving done before dark. By getting all of the moving done during the daylight hours, you’ll have much less to worry about once the sun starts setting. More importantly, it’s much safer to move during the daylight hours when you can actually see where you’re going.
Keep Walkways Free of Snow and Ice -Imagine this: the day of your move, you go outside to discover that a very light dusting of snow has fallen overnight. While you’d probably be tempted to not clear the walkways, it’s very important that you do. That light dusting of snow could end up freezing into a sheet of ice, making the job much more dangerous. It’s also a wise idea to hire someone to do snow removal at your new home the day of the move in the event that Jack Frost himself decides to stop in for a visit.
Pack Winter Supplies in Your Car – Gloves, hats, scarves, a snow shovel; all of these winter necessities are crucial to have on hand and not packed away in the moving van. Even if the weather is fairly clear the day of your move, at least you’ll know that you have your winter essentials at the ready for if snow does decide to make a visit.
Easily Whip Up Some Warm Drinks – Don’t underestimate the power of a coffee maker or crockpot. To keep your family and team of mover’s spirits up, it’s always a good idea to have some type of warm drink, like coffee or hot cocoa, on hand during your move. Crockpots are great for making large batches of hot cocoa that you can keep warm all day long.
Pack with Extra Care – With dropping temperatures, keep in mind that your most fragile items become even more vulnerable. Take extra care when packing fragile items, such as fine china…or even your beloved leg lamp. Even better- use our dish barrel to pack your fine china. You can see our how-to video on how to properly pack a dish barrel here.
We may not be able to control the weather, but we can control how we handle whatever it throws our way, especially during a move. Use these tips to make your move during the chilly season as easy as possible.
